Roughlock Falls

Roughlock Falls SD. in the Spearfish canyon of the Black Hills of South Dakota is a beautiful waterfall. Roughlock Falls name came from the pioneers that took their wagons up Spearfish Canyon. The men would "rough lock" the wagon wheels to keep them in place instead of slipping downhill .

Rough Lock

Roughlock Falls. This is located in Spearfish Canyon in South Dakota and is the largest of the three waterfalls in the canyon.. It received its name when settlers moved west and they had get through the falls. It was rough territory it is in a steep canyon and they had to lock the wheels of the wagons so they wouldn't fall back. This was taken early in the morning before the sun came over the canyon walls in middle of October.

Standing Rock Gathers Moss

This is a rock in the middle of Little Spearfish Creek down stream from Roughlock Falls in Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota. This was taken in the middle of October when the creek run off is low. It was early enough in the morning where i could slow the shutter to get the silky water flow effect rolling around the rock.

Spearfish Falls Color

Spearfish Falls is easy to miss but is a joy to see. This is a magnificent view of the falls which follows Spearfish Creek along the bottom of the Canyon floor. This was taken in October so you can see the fall colors a little bit past its peak.

Fall Reflection in Spearfish Creek

Fall Reflection. This photo is Spearfish Creek in the Black Hills of South Dakota with the fall colors of the canyon reflecting in the creek. I was able to keep the shutter speed slow to blur the water movement. The rock (lower Right) and water flowing around it made for an nice effect.
